The Aqara FP2 Presence Sensor is one of the most advanced consumer mmWave sensors available today. It supports multi-zone detection, presence tracking instead of basic motion, fall detection, and sleep monitoring.
This article explains exactly how the FP2 works with SmartThings and Homey Pro, whether an Aqara hub is required, what features transfer across platforms, and what limitations you should expect.
Important Clarification: Hub Requirement
The Aqara FP2 does NOT require an Aqara hub for setup or normal operation. It is a Wi-Fi device that connects directly to your network through the Aqara Home app.
Aqara officially lists the FP2 as 'Hub Required: No.' This means you can configure, manage zones, and operate the sensor fully within the Aqara app without purchasing an Aqara hub.
However, there is an important nuance: while a hub is not required for device setup or cloud-based automations, certain local automation execution scenarios may require an Aqara hub that supports Wi-Fi local automation. This affects where automations run, not whether the device functions.
Aqara FP2 with SmartThings
To use the FP2 with SmartThings, you must first set it up inside the Aqara Home app and configure your zones. After initial setup, the device can be added to SmartThings. No Aqara hub is required for this integration.
What typically works in SmartThings:
Presence detection
Motion state
Occupied / Not Occupied status
What is limited or not fully exposed:
Full multi-zone separation as independent triggers
Fall detection
Sleep monitoring
Advanced spatial analytics
Complete illuminance reporting in some cases

Aqara FP2 with Homey Pro
The FP2 does not appear inside the native Aqara app for Homey because it is not a Zigbee device.
The current method is to use the HomeKit Controller app in Homey Pro and add the FP2 via its HomeKit pairing code.
What typically works in Homey:
Basic presence detection
Motion state
Occupancy triggers for flows
Limitations in Homey:
Limited multi-zone exposure
No fall detection integration
Advanced features remain inside Aqara app
Functional Tradeoffs Summary:
Feature | Aqara App | SmartThings | Homey Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
Full Zone Configuration | Yes | Limited | Limited |
Presence Detection | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Multi-Zone Triggers | Yes | Partial | Limited |
Illuminance Sensor | Yes | Limited | Limited |
Fall Detection | Yes | No | No |
Sleep Monitoring | Yes | No | No |
Perimeter Alerts | Yes | No | No |
Requires Aqara Hub | No* | No | No |
*A hub is not required for setup or normal operation. An Aqara hub may be required only for specific local automation execution scenarios.
Final Recommendations
If your primary goal is reliable presence detection inside SmartThings or Homey Pro, the Aqara FP2 is not always the most practical choice. While it is the most advanced mmWave sensor in Aqara’s lineup, its WiFi architecture and ecosystem limitations mean that much of its advanced functionality remains inside the Aqara app.
For SmartThings Users
If you are primarily a SmartThings household and want tight automation control within SmartThings itself, the Aqara FP1E may be a better fit. The FP1E is Zigbee based mmWave presence sensors.
Because it uses Zigbee, it can integrate directly with SmartThings using compatible custom Edge drivers. This allows presence detection to run locally on the SmartThings hub, improving reliability and reducing cloud dependency.

Benefits of choosing the FP1E for SmartThings include:
Local Zigbee communication through the SmartThings hub
Compatibility with custom Edge drivers for improved control
Better alignment with SmartThings automation logic
No reliance on Aqara cloud for presence state
If your goal is simple and reliable room occupancy for lighting and automation inside SmartThings, the Aqara Presence Sensor FP1E is often the cleaner and more platform aligned solution.
The FP2 remains a strong choice only if you specifically want its advanced multi zone mapping, fall detection, or spatial tracking features and are comfortable managing those advanced features primarily within the Aqara app.
For Homey Pro Users
For Homey Pro users, the recommendation is similar. Because the FP2 is WiFi and integrates indirectly through HomeKit Controller, you may experience limitations in zone visibility and deeper automation capabilities.
Zigbee based Aqara sensors such as the Presence Sensor FP1E may offer smoother integration within Homey Pro via the Aqara Zigbee app, depending on app support and firmware. The Official Aqara app for Homey Pro includes support for the Presence Sensor FP1E and the Presence Sensor FP300
Zigbee devices generally align more cleanly with Homey’s local automation structure. If your primary objective is dependable occupancy detection inside Homey flows, a Zigbee based presence sensor is often the more straightforward choice.
